Greetings from Switzerland

As readers of this blog may have figured out, I am a huge fan of the F-line streetcars. I went down to Justin Herman Plaza on Friday to check out the Halloween costumes at Critical Mass, and was super excited to discover they’ve added a new car to the F fleet:

Zurich

Apologies for the photo quality, but it’s a streetcar from Zurich. What it says on the side is: “Zurich: Sister City of San Francisco.” And it’s shiny and blue! I kind of wanted to hop on to see what it was like inside, but it was pretty crammed.

I think what I like most about the fleet is how anachronistic it is — none of the cars are FROM here, they just feel like they wandered in by accident or something. Sparks the imagination, it does.

I’ve seen these! I haven’t ridden one yet, but always get excited when I see them go by. Well, I think there’s just one.

The best thing about delaying this post until today was I totally forgot about it. “When was I in SWITZERLAND???” I wondered. Eventually the post-election haze will wear off …

The Zurich street car isn’t really from Zurich. It’s actually a Brussels car painted in the Zurich scheme. This one has been hidden in the train yard for a long time and I’m glad it’s being sent out to meet the world

“I think what I like most about the fleet is how anachronistic it is — none of the cars are FROM here…”

Actually, a good portion of the street cars are from San Francisco (22 of the 86 cars).
