The Broken Escalators of BART
Until a few weeks ago I was using, on a daily basis, the Embarcadero BART/Muni station escalator that goes up to Market and Fremont. Or rather, I wasn’t using it — because it was broken for something like three weeks. When I stopped using that station regularly, it was still broken and I don’t know if it’s been fixed.
Now, the up-escalator at 24th Street Mission station is also busted. Oh, there’s another one, but it’s always set in the “down” direction. Yeah, the lazy direction. It forces anyone with real trouble getting up stairs to use the stinky, damp, slow, pee-scented elevator.
I can’t help but wonder if there’s some kind of part that keeps breaking down in these escalators, in their constant states of disrepair, that’s difficult to come by — or whether economic factors are preventing them from getting fixed. It used to be that escalators were repaired within 24 hours or so, but not so these days.

Hahahaha, the down escalator is the lazy side. Totally.
I am a lazy transit rider. Every day since this escalator has been broken, I walk through the fare gates, look to my right to see their status, and when still broken turn around and go through the other exit because, really, I live north-east of the station.

Yes, it is always the up escalator that’s broken! It makes me feel so cheated when I have to walk up an escalator.

I hate not-working escalators enough never to use them. Seriously, the moment I do is the moment you’ll hear about later that day: “SF man mangled by escalator’s sudden jolt into power.”
