I always thought that ‘ginger’ was a term for a person who had one African American parent, and one White, redheaded (which I happen to be) parent, thus giving a gingerish complexion and hair color… but I think most people dont know that and just use it as a nickname for redheads… People call me that all the time, always in an affectionate way…*shrugs* Great story btw… :)

Thanks for the comment, Chibbs. I’m not aware of “Ginger” as an epithet referring to Irish people, but then, there are probably more epithets I don’t know than those I do. Anyone?

I am not easily offended, nor is this comment one of offense. But I recoiled at “Ginger” being used so repeatedly for the younger, Irish man’s name. There is a harshness to this story, not only in the incident told, but in the way it is told, and perhaps Ginger is part of that device. “Ginger” seems almost an epithet. Curious.

I almost kinda feel bad for Oompa because in my head the storyline is something different: maybe that Ginger is sleeping with Oompa’s wife, so when Oompa found out, he screamed, “You’re the one (who is sleeping with my wife! – my interpretation)!” And then, cut to scene: heart ache all around, and now he’s got a missing tooth and bloody mouth.

God, I’m a hopeless romantic.
