Miracle on 16th Street

These Seats Must Be Vacated For Seniors and Cane Balancers

I was on a quiet 22 Fillmore the other morning, zoning out and listening to some music. At 16th and Shotwell a man in a wheelchair got on. He expertly maneuvered his chair into the wheelchair spot in the front of the bus, flipping the seats up when his companion couldn’t figure out how to do it. He put on his brakes and the bus took off again, toward Harrison Street.

The man in the wheelchair held up two quarters. Then he slowly stood up and walked to the front of the bus to pay his fare.

Everyone watched him hobble the six or seven feet up to the fare collection box.

He wasn’t walking that well, but he was walking.

A miraculous recovery? We’ll never know for sure.

He took his transfer and returned to his chair, where he remained for the rest of my commute.

Wheelchair doesn’t mean paralyzed. There’s a whole spectrum of mobility impairments in the world. You just saw was a person who could walk, but not far or easily or quickly. He did the courteous thing of not holding up the whole bus and blocking the door with his chair as he paid the fare.

cheers, Nancy.

And hey, joe.moore, quit staring at people. It’s rude. Especially staring at people who need to make more of an effort to accomplish the things you so easily can do. It’s called a disability–don’t stare!

Um, my name’s not Joe and I stare at everyone. This isn’t a post about my problem with disabled/differently abled people… Chill out! It was just funny, and everyone seemed to have the same confused reaction.
Cheers!
