‘An F-Market bit me today at lunch’

This afternoon plug1 of whatimseeing.com sent us this harrowing tale on the F.

Today during lunch, photographers Travis Jensen, RumNose, and myself took a 2 hour photowalk downtown. Around 1:30 we headed back to our respective offices, and I decided to board an F-Market train down to Spear. The front of the tram was very crowded and since I am TransLink-compliant, I boarded via the back door. Before I could get my arm completely in the tram, the driver slammed the doors shut and proceeded to drive away, with MY ARM HANGING OUT OF THE TRAM.

I yelled “back doooooooooooor” hoping to get my arm into the vehicle and out of harm’s way. My fellow passengers also pleaded for the driver to stop and open the door. But he did not. He just kept driving.

My arm was hanging out the tram from right below the elbow to the fingers. I could have hi-fived you if I saw you on a platform.

More was out than in, I’ll put it that way.

The result of me pulling my arm through the crack in the doors can be seen in the photo above.

Oh, wow. I can’t believe the driver didn’t open the door. Actually, I don’t like believing that the doors don’t pop open if something is in the way…

Not cool. This is why you never enter the back door of a F-line PCC, their doors close automatically on you and they keep closing no matter what.

The PCC cars’ rear doors will open (or at least not close all the way) if there is something obstructing them. It sounds like this might have actually been the Milan car?… of which both front and rear doors are opened AND closed via button/switch by the tram operator. There are NO sensors to open the door if there is something in its way, so the operator must make sure the doors are clear before they close them.

It’s HORRIBLE what happened to you, and I’m appalled the driver wouldn’t stop and open the door for a sec… however, it’s hard for them to see back there and they don’t expect people to board on the back (except on the bus where it happens all the time)… and, despite the TransLink Card Readers on the back, boarding on the rear in not yet permitted (except on Muni Metro)… and there are still large stickers on the rear saying NOT to board on the back… so you do so at your own risk.

But the driver is still a jerk-wad for putting you in danger like that and not heeding everyone call to stop… a situation I’ve heard of happening several times before.
