It sounds like this might have actually been the Milan car?... of which both front and rear doors are opened AND closed via button/switch by the tram operator. There are NO sensors to open the door if there is something in its way, so the operator must make sure the doors are clear before they close them. It's HORRIBLE what happened to you, and I'm appalled the driver wouldn't stop and open the door for a sec... however, it's hard for them to see back there and they don't expect people to board on the back (except on the bus where it happens all the time)... and, despite the TransLink Card Readers on the back, boarding on the rear in not yet permitted (except on Muni Metro)... and there are still large stickers on the rear saying NOT to board on the back... so you do so at your own risk. But the driver is still a jerk-wad for putting you in danger like that and not heeding everyone call to stop... a situation I've heard of happening several times before.
