With 10 percent of riders cheating the system, Muni should probably look at some alternative sources of income, such as this fabulous fare box for sale on Craigslist:
San Francisco Muni * Trolleycar Farebox * 1970s – $325 (novato)
San Francisco Muni * Trolleycar Farebox * 1970s
Taken right out of a MUNI Trolleycar
Farebox
1970’s
Works Great
$325
Or how about this 1984 articulated Muni bus for sale? According to the seller (not Muni), the bus was “originally a San Francisco Muni bus that eventually ended up in Southern California as a Movie Bus” and has made cameos in “The Italian Job” and other small TV roles. Bids start at $2300 on eBay. Thanks to SFist and reader Katherine for the tip-off.
What does one do with a bus? Well, you have the whole year to revamp it into your Burning Man mobile. Just one idea.

When SF gets free public transit, there really will be a fare box fire sale…

It should be free. Commerce, CA, buses carry as many as Muni, and have been free for years. To pay for free transit, we could stop subsidizing the auto and fossil-fuel companies. Start by making them pay for the dumping of carbon into the atmosphere, which, currently, they are doing for free.

oooh… you could buy the bus and the fare box and start your own Muni line… the R Rachel, for example.
