Please don’t do that

I take the 31 towards Fillmore after I leave work. Normally, I walk the mile home but today I was particularly tired and wanted a quick trip. It was a quick ride but disgusting to say the least.

The bus was packed, smelled like like stale body odor and Cheetos, and of course, there had to be this guy. Standing up, holding on, trying not to breathe the stench in too much, I notice a man sitting down flailing about. He was shirtless with shorts and wearing sneakers with no socks. He had scabs all over his upper body and was talking to himself.

Now, I know I was not the only person praying to get the hell off that bus asap. Then, he stood up and started violently picking his nose. I mean really sticking his fingers up there. I could have barfed right then.

Soon after he took the same finger and proceeded to pick some food out of his teeth. I mean, he was getting waaay back there. THEN, to top it off, he started gagging and I truly believe he was doing this on purpose. I’ve been in the city for 5 months and this ride home was the worst I’ve experienced so far. Let me tell you, 5 minutes on the bus with someone like that will haunt you forever.

Oh noooooooez… another poor little rich girl (or boy) who moves to SF and is scared of the horrible plebs who ride the buses. How could you ever possibly stay in a place like this? It must be so much nicer back in Des Moines.

God I hate people like this. I’ve lived in SF for all of my 30 years and it never ceases to amaze me how many whiny and prissy hipster wannabes or new urban professionals complain about SF but somehow never seem to actually leave…How about this? You go back to wherever you’re from, and I might actually be able to buy the house I grew up in on Florida street. Fucking deuschbags…

Maybe he will move out of SF as soon as those scabs heal and his nose if finally booger-free.

Wow, Drew, for someone who decries the judgmental mentality of the poor little prissy whiny rich hipster douchebag wannabe urban professional…you sure do cast a lot of stones. Riding Muni is a social exercise whether you want it to be or not. Here you are in a tin can packed like sardines sharing your journey with all these people; you all implicitly agree not to fart or pick your nose or generally do anything offensive to the general welfare of the group. I wholeheartedly agree with the writer that such an experience was horrible and I’ll go one step further and suggest that it was a basic fuck you from the guy who purposely held the bus hostage to his evening ablutions.

Well, what can I say, Welcome to San Francisco! I guess we have pose-able fingers for a purpose.

In all seriousness though, I do see people like the man you were talking about around the city a lot. While scabs and nose picking gross me out too (who wouldn’t be?), it also makes me really sad to see people in a totally undignified situation like this – possible addiction or mental illness or whatever else.

The other day I was helping a friend move and saw a man take a dump right behind her moving truck. It almost made me lose my lunch a little. But then, what kind of place do we live in that we don’t have enough public bathrooms for really basic needs, you know?

I saw this same guy on the 38 a few weeks ago. your description of him fits him exactly, it had to be the same guy, doing the same behavior. However, as disgusting as this was, this poor man was clearly not doing this on purpose, he was clearly mentally disabled in some way, and I felt bad for him. He seemed to be alone, and I felt bad that he didn’t have anyone to help him, he certainly needed it. It really makes me count my blessings.

Listen here and listen clear DREW. I am in no way stuck up, rich, a hipster nor a douche my friend. I am simply verbally expressing my observations that took place that day. The guy knew he was being gross. Do you think he would do that if he were by myself? Maybe, but he was definitely doing it for attention. When you’re in a packed bus and anxious to get home the last thing you want to see is that. I’m sure you would have felt the same fucking way if you had a person invading your personal space with the threat of bugers and puke. Thanks everyone else for being supportive.
