Can Kids Use the Adult Fast Pass?

Justin is a high school student who ran into trouble when he used an A Fast Pass:

As I was leaving Lowell high school as any other day, a half full 29 comes up to the curb. I thought I got lucky that day. That all changed when i got into the bus. I showed the driver an Adult fast pass with BART (being a kid from high school). As I made my way in, I was called back to the front and asked if I was a valid adult. Obvisously I said no.

Then the driver ask me to pay me fare. I argued about the value of a kids fast pass and an adult one (which to my calculations is at least $50 more). He said either pay or I’ll call the cops. Being a nice kid, I paid a dollar and complained about it to customer service. They didn’t really help though. I never got my dollar back.

We’ve contacted SFMTA to clarify the policy around this. Stay tuned.

A few months ago I had my 14 year old brother visting me from out of town. The time he happen to be here was during the 3-day grace period you get with the montly passes. Anyways one day we desided to go to the mall, he paid for his fair and We had the fare inspectors checking fares like they do at Powell. Well I asked one of the fare inspectors if my 14 y.o. Brother can use my old monthly pass since it’s already the beginning of the new month. He said that thier was no problem with my little brother using an adult fast pass because it’s a valid pass. But me using a youth pass was a whole different story.

Hey Justin, just so you know this is coming from a high schooler (not from Lowell), maybe it might be easier for you to get a Clipper Card. Although I’ve known many kids that have used the A-pass on Muni. Maybe they should start talking about a Y-pass with BART privileges? Then again they’re going away soon…

Also, not sure whether you know this, but there’s a good chance Lowell might sell Youth BART tickets…

I’m curious if muni has a policy against pass sharing (like a family buying a pass and one person uses it one day and another the next, not both trying to use it at the same time).

Seems unenforceable to me, but I don’t see any other reason they reject an adult pass being used by as kid except this. I mean they get more money from adult passes, so why would they care?

Also, I’m curious if clipper has a different beep or reader display for adult vs child passes, cause otherwise adults could get kid passes for cheaper and no one would know the difference.

    Whole Wheat Toast Reply:

Naw, the cards are specifically encoded so the Adults get the Adult fast passes on Clipper and the kids get the Youth fast passes on the Clipper.
