Muni Disruption From Light-Rail Derailment

Rider Devin has an eyewitness report of tonight’s derailment on Folsom and Embarcadero.

Waiting at the Folsom and Embarcadero N/T stop this evening there was a muffled bang and a cloud of dust, which turned out to be a 2-car “inbound” N-Judah (well, N-Caltrain) derailing, with the rear car crashing into the corner of the platform. No one seemed hurt, at least from the outside, but the driver didn’t seem in a great hurry to let his trapped passengers out, either.

The train had cleared the intersection at Folsom, so there wasn’t a traffic jam, but still messy. If you were wondering what the “inbound delay at Van Ness station” notices were alluding to, this was probably it.

Bay City News via SFAppeal confirmed the derailment that happened just before 7 p.m. Shuttle buses were in place to take riders to their destinations, SFMTA spokesperson Paul Rose told Bay City News. The cause of the derailment is under investigation, according to the report.

I understand that this sort of thing happens. What I don’t understand is why Muni couldn’t announce this to stranded passengers all over the city.

You have electronic signs at many surface stops. How hard would it have been for them to change the signs to say “Out of service”?
