SFPD Releases Video of Bicyclist Attacking Muni Station Agent

The San Francisco Police Department released this video of a bicyclist who attacked a Muni station agent. This happened at the Van Ness station when the agent told said bicyclist that he couldn’t take his bike on the train.

From SFGate:

The assault happened Oct. 10 around 7:40 p.m. after the bicyclist tried to pass through the fare gates at the station with his bike, police said.

The station agent on duty, a 55-year-old man, told the bicyclist he could not bring his bike into the station, but the man ignored him, lifted his bike over the railing and jumped over the railing himself.

The station agent suffered serious injuries from blows to his head and has not been able to return to work, SFGate reports. The San Francisco Police Department website has two more closeup photos of the assailant from the surveillance video.

From the SFPD: Anyone with information is asked to contact S.F.P.D. Muni Task Force at (415) 832-8338 or the anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text-a-tip to TIP411, and begin the text with SFPD.

Bit of a slanderous title here. Clearly this person is not a bicyclist, as his behavior and actions do NOT represent those of bicyclists and the bicycling community. Just a chump with a bike. Might even be stolen.

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 3 Thumb down 9

How is this slander? The assailant had a bike with him, ergo he is a bicyclist.

Can’t we agree there are negative connotations in a title “Bicyclist Attacking Agent?”

And doesn’t someone have to be actively riding a bicycle to be a bicyclist??

Just because I have turntables, doesn’t make me a DJ…

So sad, tragic even, that the transit community here seems to side more with car culture than with other alternative transport modes like bicycling. Go ‘head, keep carbon emitting and keep on truckin’!!!

The title is merely descriptive. Because he was taking a bike onto Metro, one can surmise that he rides said bike and is, therefore a bicyclist. The mere fact that he was dismounted from his bike doesn’t mean he ceases to be a bicyclist any more than a guitarist is only a guitarist when he plays a guitar.

And how is the title slanderous of bicyclists in general?

“Clearly this person is not a bicyclist, as his behavior and actions do NOT represent those of bicyclists and the bicycling community. Just a chump with a bike. Might even be stolen.”

This sounds like the “No True Scotsman” argument to me. Call it “No True Bicyclist”
