Three Bloggers Walk Into BART…   01.10.12

And the journey turns into the best BART ride ever.

From Brokeass Stuart, who always knows how to turn on the fun:

We were all coming back from Allan’s (from MissionMission) birthday in Oakland. Ariel (also from Mission Mission) started doing flips on BART and eventually there were like four people doing them at a time. It was awesome!

See the rest of the acrobatics (and the romantic connection they inspired) at MissionMission.

Have you seen the accordion-playing cyclist on BART?   12.20.11

@pkannofisbump has. She shared the photo above, and thinks he’s quite good.

If you have seen or heard this fella, send us your stories, photos, and (we hope) videos.

BART Kaleidoscope   08.25.11

BART

Burrito Justice turned BART upside down and inside out in a photo series he calls KaleidoBART. I’ve been tilting my head trying to figure out where the pieces all came from. See his BART kaleidoscope for youself.

Got cool Muni/BART/Caltrain photos for us? Our Muni Flickr photo pool is waiting for you! And if you like our photo pool, don’t forget to vote for us in the SF Weekly Web Awards.

Testing Handcuffs on BART   05.31.11

Say you want to practice how to get out of a pair of handcuffs, and you have some time to kill while in transit, why the hell not?

We found this photo on Matt Mullenweg’s blog — he’s the founder of Automattic, which runs WordPress. We’re huge fans of WordPress here at Muni Diaries. So, thanks, Matt!

Photo Diary: Documenting BART Musicians   03.25.11

Peter Taylor started a project called BART Musicians a little over a year ago as part of a black and white darkroom class at Rayko Gallery, but the project has since grown to include incredibly compelling photographs of musicians who add to the soundtrack of our daily commute.

From Peter:

I though it would give me an interesting subject matter and allow me to grow as a portraitist. I thought I’d find a lot of the older, rougher, gnarled faces that i love to photograph and that was about it.

As i got further and further into the project, i became friends with a number of the musicians, realised that the reasons they are there, the types of music and walks of life they come from are all very diverse. Far more diverse than i’d expected. Some are homeless, trying to get money to get off the streets, and offer people something valueable in exchange for their donation. Some are students, just practicing in front of an audience, some are career musicians who don’t have day jobs, and use it to make ends meet between shows, and some are trying to spread a gospel of some sort.

The New York Times has just written about the city’s subway musicians, most of them aren’t known by name, but the most notable woman musician is actually actress Gabourey Sidibe’s mother. In San Francisco, some of the musicians are riders’ favorites, like a bluegrass duo at Montgomery Street Station that our Twitter followers have made inquiries about.

Peter identified some of the musicians but not all. If you have a clip of these musicians or know them, let us know. Meanwhile, here are more of Peter’s amazing portraits of BART musicians.

Check out the BART Musicians website to see more portraits of musicians at Muni/BART stations and help him identify more of the musicians he’s photographed.

San Francisco No Pants Subway Ride 2011   01.10.11

Sunday was the day. BART was the venue. Pants were nowhere to be found. We just added more pictures from photographers Marco Sanchez and Der Dunn.

The No Pants Subway Ride 2011 seems to have gone off without a hitch (or an inseam).

If you have photos of the No Pants ride, share them on Muni Diaries. More photos by Bhautik Joshi. And here are No Pants rides of past years: 2010 2009

Like this post (or hate pants)? We added a Facebook Like button at the bottom of our posts so you can tell your friends about it.

Muni a smoother ride than AAU shuttle …   11.27.09

2009-11-24 14.18.38

… but riding either is just such a San Francisco treat. Spotted this art, signifying some sort of arts-appreciation something-or-other, on an Academy of Art shuttle Tuesday. I have to say this: It was one bumpy-as-fuck ride. At least Muni buses have shock absorbers. I think.

Billie Jean, not my lover either   08.14.09

billiejean

A mild flurry of tweets came across the wire yesterday from @anthologie detailing a seemingly spontaneous dance-a-thon at the 24th St. BART station. Here’s a recap of the action:

approx. 3 p.m. 2 men dancing to Around The World on the platform at 24th. Man playing violin concertos upstairs.

approx. 4 p.m. 24th st guys still here. Now dancing to PYT.

approx 4:15 p.m. Billie Jean (@ 24th St)

Awesome. What else can we say, really? The only way this would’ve been better is if the tiles on the platform had lit up.

Weekend Photo Diary: Purple BART Man   07.10.09

purpleBARTman
Photo by Flickr user natecardozo from the Muni Photos Flickr group

Something about the purpleness of this guy screams out “this weekend.” Maybe it’s also the fact that no one else seems to be on the platform with dude.

It’s gonna be one of those weekends where San Francisco weather doesn’t really totally suck (morning fog, 60-ish afternoon highs), but where, beginning Monday, the weather suddenly is all “Oh, haha, now I’m awesome. Now that the weekend is over and you suckers are back in the cube.”

Stay warm, have fun, and send us your Muni stories!

xoxo
