Footwear of Choice on Muni

Muni story opportunities happen everywhere, especially when you’re waiting for the T with a bunch of WordCampers. This photo came from George from Automattic, who kindly shared it with me a few weeks ago at the WordPress extravaganza.

I know the weather is San Francisco is always temperate, but barefoot, really? The footwear of choice on Muni can be these flashy orange babies, adorned with cream bow tie, or just anything from Jeremy Brooks’ photo documentation of awesome showgazing. No need to go au naturel!

Update (4:18 p.m. Sunday): SF Appeal reports that the suspect’s gun has been recovered.

Update (8:29 p.m.): The Examiner now reports that the suspect in the shooting near Oakdale and Third has died from wounds he received after being shot by SFPD. The Examiner reports that:

“the two officers were conducting Muni fare inspections on a T-Third Street light-rail train when they detained the suspect on the platform at Third and Oakdale. The man bolted from the platform and fired back on the two officers, Andraychak said. That is when the cops shot at the suspect, with one officer kneeling down to take aim, according to one witness.”

Original post: The Examiner is reporting that a man was shot by SFPD in the Bayview after deboarding a T-Third not having paid fare. We’ll bring you updates as we get them.

Creep on the T-Third (update)

I printed your blog and gave it to the Captain to see what we can do. I recommend that a police report be made if you see this guy doing this again. If you call the police while on the bus, they can meet the bus and identify him.

Original post: Mel has a disturbing report from the eastside:

There is a total creep who gets on the T-Third line over by Ingleside. He preys on young girls who usually seem too scared to confront him, or aren’t even sure of the situation. I know, because he assumed I was one of those.

He will sit next to you in the cramped two-person seats. At some point he will move one of his arms to the side, like he’s reaching for something in his pocket. The only thing is, the arm stays in that awkward position, usually touching a young girl’s thigh or buttock for a really long time.

I know it seems silly, but when I experienced it, I honestly couldn’t be sure he was doing what I thought he was doing. I remember elbowing the guy, and he said he was “reaching for something in his pocket.” Yeah. No one “reaches” for 2 minutes ++.

The guy is really tall, maybe over 6 feet, and just an awkward-looking fellow. I don’t know if there’s anything mentally wrong with him, but his conduct is definitely wrong.

After he tried that on me, he actually kept using the same technique on other girls. I’ve caught him on two other occasions, and have called him out on it. Other than seeming like a crazy person by glaring or trying to warn these other would-be victims, I’m not sure how I can really prevent this from happening to other women.

Hey creepy dude, stop creeping people out, cuz you don’t wanna end up another Muni humper. If anyone else experienced this or any other creep on the T-Third or any other routes, let us know. We also advise you to contact the police, or at the very least, let the driver or SFMTA know about it.

Was something in the air this morning on Muni?

We saw several tweets this morning mentioning friendly, efficient Muni operators. Perhaps the Rapture is today, not Saturday? In any case, we’re seeing staggering evidence of the world going kablooey any second now.

To whit:

Muni driver greeted me with a smile, “good morning sir, everything good today.”. #5578 rt. 30 you are an example. – @sgharms

I think I might have boarded Muni airline 30x. Busdriver said that we might expect sunny weather on the other side of the broadway tunnel. – @bmson

This #Muni driver is entirely too cheery for his AM 30x clientele. Not complaining–it beats the usual driver surliness. – @sfkatya

After I filled out a scathing survey on MUNI, this lovely T-Line driver waited for me as I ran for the train. Karma? – @katinaminer

This makes us wonder: If the operators union were to craft a totally coordinated, skillfully executed PR campaign to be friendly and efficient, would it change your opinion of the system as a whole?

Six Injured When Big Rig Hits Muni (Update)

Six people were injured when a big-rig hit the Muni KT-Ingleside/Third Street line in Dogpatch this morning, reports Bay City News/SF Appeal. The accident was reported around 10:30 a.m. on the corner of Third and 23rd Street, causing minor injuries to six people at the scene, who were taken to a hospital and expect to be ok, according to reports.

Police activity on the T-Third

@caltraindiaries Twitstress (?) Laura O. sends the following report, which she estimates took place a little after 1 p.m.:

Was walking back from lunch and saw a flurry of cop cars. Roughly 6 cars, two motorcycles and the weird four wheel drive white car zoomed down 4th, past Caltrain and surrounded a T car that was idle at the station.

Literally they surrounded it — it was crazy. Passengers streamed off, and we hurried over to take a look. Looks like two guys got in a fight; one was arrested, the other just walked away. All in all I’d guess that there were 15 + cops.

Also, the T was then sent back to Dogpatch; wasn’t allowed to continue on its normal route.

Anyone know what is or was going on? If the guys were just fighting, why was one allowed to “just walk away”?

Origami Guy on the T Line

Riding the bus means that sometimes you might meet some delightful people. John R. describes his annual encounter with “origami guy.”

I ride the T line in the mornings with my preschooler. About once a year we run into someone I call the “origami guy,” who always seems to have an origami bird ready to give to kids.

He’s 50 yr+, with curly gray hair pulled back in a ponytail. I see him only on the T line between the ball park and Montgomery station. He strikes me as a harmless eccentric type. This photo above is a sample of his work.

Cute! We’ve heard about quirky passengers including a tap-dancing enthusiast, a French disciplinarian, and some folks who really hate pants. Who’s the most intriguing passenger on your commute? We wanna know.
