Everything You Need to Know About Muni Service During Bay to Breakers Sunday

Our annual costumed drunk running race is back Sunday, and here’s everything you need to know about commuting during Bay to Breakers via the SFMTA. Don’t forgot to tweet your best B2B photos to @munidiaries!

Summary of Service Impacts
On Sunday the race will begin at 8 a.m.
The annual Bay to Breakers footrace will cause major reroutes and delays Sunday morning. The race starts on Howard from Steuart to 9th Street., runs on Hayes from Market to Divisadero, on Fell from Divisadero to the Golden Gate Park, and on JFK Drive all the way to the Great Highway.

If you’re not participating in the race, you are encouraged to avoid areas affected by the Bay to Breakers.

Lines and routes that operate parallel to the course:

  • The 5, 31, 38, 71 and N Owl routes and N Line will experience crowding and delays.
  • There will be added service to and from the race on the 5L, 38L, and NX routes.
  • There will be added morning N Line Metro service east of 19th Avenue . These trips will not stop at Civic Center, Powell, or Montgomery.

Routes that cross the course:

  • The 19, 22, 24, 27, 33, 43 and 47 routes will be divided into 2 sections, with no sevice between sections.
  • You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or else take as alternate route.
  •  The 8X, 10 and 12 routes will route non-stop around the course via The Embarcadero.
  •  The 30 and 45 routes will not serve south of Market. Use the 8X, 10 or 12 routes to access SoMa.
  •  The 49 Route will not serve north of Mission and South Van Ness. You will have to walk to get from one side of the race to the other, or else take alternate routings, to reach the 47 Route for Van Ness service.
  • You can cross the park on the 18, 28, 29 or 44 routes. Expect delays due to heavy ridership and traffic.
  • Once BART opens, you can take BART from south of Market Street (16th/Mission, 24th/Mission, Glen Park, Balboa Park) to any Market Street stop. Regular BART fares apply. A Muni Adult Fast Pass may be used within San Francisco.

Routes that normally go to the Ferry Building:

  • The 21 and 31 routes will only go to the Transbay Terminal. The 21 will also reroute over most of its route.
  • Market and Mission Street lines:
  • Some routes on Market and Mission – 6, 9, 14, 49, 71, K-L-M Owls – will only go to Market, 10th or 11th Street.
  • There will be a Market/Mission shuttle to get customers between 8th and Beale.
  • Before 8 a.m.: use the 5 and 21 routes between Market and 8th Streets and the Transbay Terminal.
  • After 8 a.m.: use Market Street Metro subway service.
  • After 8 a.m.: Adult Fast Pass holders may use BART between Market Street stations and Mission District stations to cross the course for no charge. All others may use BART to cross the course at their regular BART fare.

REROUTE AND DELAY DETAILS

You are strongly urged to call the San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center before race day for personalized trip assistance. The following is general information that may help if you are unable to reach the Transit Information Center, and may not be the most efficient for your particular trip. Expect crowding and allow a lot of extra time for your trip.

LINE TIME AFFECTED SERVICE DETAILS
Market/Mission Shuttle 6:00 am until approximately 10:00 am
  • Added service to replace other service on Market east of 8th
  • Clockwise: From Beale and Mission via Beale, right on Mission, right on 7th Street, right on Market, right on Beale to terminal.
  • Counter clockwise: From Main and Mission via Main, left on Market, left on 8th, left on Mission, and left on Main to terminal.
F Market and Wharves Approximately 7 a.m. until clear
  • Line divided into 2 sections: Castro to 11th Street and Ferry Building to Fisherman’s Wharf. No service between sections.
  • Before 8 a.m.: use the 5, 21 or Market/Mission Shuttle route to downtown at Market and 7th, a walk of .5 mile. Expect delays when crossing the race route. Only the 21 route goes all the way between 7th and Steuart streets.
  • After 8 a.m.: use Metro Subway service between Van Ness and Embarcadero Station.
K-L-M Owl 7:30 a.m. to end of Sunday morning Owl service
  • No service east of Van Ness.
  • First outbound stop on Market at Van Ness.
  • Before 8 a.m.: use the 5, 21 or Market/Mission Shuttle route to downtown at Market and 7th. Expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • After 8 a.m.: use Metro Subway service.
N Owl inbound 6 a.m. to end of Sunday morning Owl service
  • No stops on Market east of Van Ness.
  • Steuart and Mission missed.
  • The Embarcadero and Howard missed.
  • From Market and Van Ness, use the 5, 21 or Market/Mission Shuttle route to downtown at Market and 7th, a walk of .5 mile. Expect delays when crossing the race route. Only the 21 route goes all the way between 7th and Steuart streets.
  • Delays and crowding expected.
  • There will be added Express inbound service. If you want local stops, be sure to board a local bus.
N Owl outbound 6 a.m. to end of Sunday morning Owl service
  • No stops on King, The Embarcadero or Don Chee Way.
  • No stops on Market east of Gough.
  • Transfer to/from the 5, 21 or Market/Mission Shuttle route for service to Market Street, a walk of .7 mile from Market and Gough. Expect delayswhen crossing the race route.
T Owl 8 a.m. to end of Sunday morning Owl service
  • No service on Market Street. Transfer to/from the 21 Route or Muni Metro at Embarcadero Station.
2 Clement 6 to 10 a.m.
  • No service on Market. Use stop at Sutter and Sansome.
5 Fulton Start of service a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Last inbound stop on Beale between Market and Mission.
  • First outbound stop on Market at Front.
  • Outbound buses may run up to 10 minutes early.
  • There will be added Express inbound service. If you want local stops, be sure to board a local bus.
6 Parnassus 6 to 10 a.m.
  • No service east of Market and Page.
  • Before 8 a.m.: transfer to 5, 21 or Market/Mission Shuttle route to downtown at Market and 7th, a walk of .6 mile. Expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • After 8 a.m. use Metro Subway service at Van Ness Station.
8X Bayshore Express 6 to 10 a.m.
  • Inbound non-stop reroute between Folsom and Market.
  • Outbound non-stop reroute between Clay and Harrison.
9 San Bruno 6 to 10 a.m.
  • No service north of Mission and 11th.
  • Before 8 a.m.: transfer to 5, 21 or Market/Mission Shuttle route to downtown at Market and 7th, a walk of .5 mile. Expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • After 8 a.m. use Metro Subway service at Van Ness Station.
10 Townsend 6 to 10 a.m.
  • Inbound stops missed between 2nd / Folsom and Sansome / Sutter.
  • Outbound stops missed between Battery / Washington and Sansome / Sutter.
12 Folsom/Pacific 6 to 10 a.m.
  • Inbound stops missed between 2nd / Folsom and Washington / Sansome.
  • Outbound stops missed between Broadway / Battery and Harrison / 2nd.

14L Mission Limited
6 to 10 a.m.
  • No service east of Mission and 11th.
  • Before 8 a.m.: transfer to 5, 21 or Market/Mission Shuttle route to downtown at Market and 7th, a walk of .6 of a mile. Expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • After 8 a.m.: use Market Street Metro Subway service from Van Ness Station.
  • After 8 a.m.: use BART from 16th Street/Mission Station to any Market Street Station. BART fares apply.
18 46th Avenue Beginning of service until clear
  • No stops between Irving and Fulton.
  • Southbound trips may leave early.
19 Polk 6 to 10 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of Mission, and south of Folsom.
  • No service between 8th and Folsom and 8th and Mission.
  • You can try to walk between Harrison and Mission, about .4 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section,take the 10 or 12 Route at Pacific to Harrison and 8th, or
  1. Take N Owl Route (before 8 a.m.) or N Line (after 8 a.m.) to Folsom and The Embarcadero.
  2. Take the 10 or 12 route, whichever comes first, to 8th Street, where you can get Route 19.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section,take 12 Route from Folsom and 8th to Polk.
21 Hayes 6 to 11 a.m.
  • Uses the 5 Route routing between Stanyan and Market: On Fulton between Stanyan and Central, on McAllister between Central and Market.
  • Uses Mission inbound between 4th and Main.
  • Leaves downtown from Mian and Mission.
  • Trips may leave downtown early.
22 Fillmore 6 to 10:30 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of McAllister, and south of Haight.
  • No service between Haight and Fillmore and Fillmore and McAllister.
  • You can try to walk between McAllister and Haight, about .5 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section:
    1. At McAllister, transfer to the 5 Route east to Civic Center Station.
    2. Transfer to the N Owl Route (before 8 a.m.) or any Metro line (after 8 a.m.) west to Church Street, where you can transfer to the 22 Route.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
    1. At Church and Market, transfer to the N Owl Route before 8 a.m. or any Metro line after 8 a.m. east to Civic Center Station.
    2. Transfer to the 5 Route west on McAllister at 7th to Fillmore, where you can transfer again to the 22 route.
  • It may be faster to use some other combination of routes and lines or BART in place of the 22 Route. Call the San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center for personalized trip assistance.
24 Divisadero 6 to 11 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of McAllister, and south of Haight.
  • No service between Haight and Divisadero and Divisadero and McAllister.
  • You can try to walk between McAllister and Haight, about .5 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section:
    1. At McAllister, transfer to the 5 Route east to Civic Center Station.
    2. Transfer to the N Owl Route before 8 a.m. or any Metro line after 8 a.m. west to Castro Street, where you can transfer to the 24 route.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
    1. At Church and Market, transfer to the N Owl Route before 8 a.m. or any Metro line after 8 a.m. east to Civic Center Station.
    2. Transfer to the 5 Route west on McAllister at 7th to Divisadero, where you transfer to the 24 Route.
  • It may be faster to use some other combination of routes and lines or BART in place of Route 24. Call the San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center for personalized trip assistance.
27 Bryant 6 to 10 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of Mission, and south of Harrison.
  • No service between 5th and Harrison and 5th and Mission.
  • You can try to walk between Harrison and Mission, about .4 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • It may be faster to use some other combination of routes and lines or BART in place of Route 27. Call the San Francisco 311 Customer Service Center for personalized trip assistance.
28 19th Avenue 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • No reroute. Delays and crowding expected.
29 Sunset 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • No reroute. Delays and crowding expected.
30 Stockton 6 to 10 a.m.
  • No service south of Market.
  • To get to Caltrain, from 6:30 a.m. transfer to the 10 Route at Broadway and Stockton.
  • To get from Caltrain, from 6:55 a.m. take the 10 Route to Pacific and Stockton.
31 Balboa 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Delays and crowding expected.
  • Inbound service reroutes via Mission between 4th and Main.
33 Stanyan 5:50 to at least 11:30 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of Fulton, and south of Haight.
  • No service between sections.
  • The section north of Fulton and Stanyan will run only once each half hour, leaving Sacramento and Stanyan at 20 and 50 minutes after the hours.
  • You can try to walk between Fulton and Haight, about .4 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section:
    1. Instead of taking the 33 Route, take the 1, 2, 31 or 38 Route west to 6th Avenue or the 5 Route to 8th Avenue.
    2. Transfer to the 44 Route south to Lincoln and Judah.
    3. Transfer to the 71 Route east to Haight and Cole, where you can take the 33 Route.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
    1. Take the N Line west to 9th and Judah.
    2. Take the 44 Route north to whichever of the following streets is closest to your destination, then transfer going east:
      • Fulton (5 Route)
      • Balboa (31 Route),
      • Geary (38 Route),
      • Clement (2 Route), or
      • California (1 Route)
38, 38L Geary and Limited 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Last inbound stop on Beale between Market and Mission.
  • First outbound stop on Fremont at Market.
  • Outbound buses may run up to 10 minutes early.
43 Masonic 7 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of Hayes, and south of Oak.
  • No service between sections.
  • You can try to walk between Hayes and Oak, about .1 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section:
    • Consider using the 28 Route from the Marina District to the Sunset District, or
    1. Instead of taking the 43 Route, take the 1, 2, 31 or 38 route west to 6th Avenue or the 5 Route at Fulton west to 8th Avenue.
    2. Transfer to the 44 Route south to Lincoln and Judah where you can take the 43 Route.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section:
    • Consider using the 28 Route from the Sunset District to the Marina District, or
    • Take the 44 Route north from 9th and Judah to whichever of the following streets is closest to your destination, then transfer going east:
      • Fulton (5 Route)
      • Balboa (31 Route),
      • Geary (38 Route),
      • Clement (2 Route), or
      • California (1 Route).

 

44 O’Shaughnessy 7 to 11:30 a.m.
  • No stops in park.
  • No stop going northbound at 9th and Irving or 9th and Lincoln. Use stop at 9th and Judah.
45 Union/Stockton 7 to 9 a.m.
  • No service south of Market.
  • To get to Caltrain, from 6:30 a.m. transfer to the 10 Route at Broadway and Stockton.
  • To get from Caltrain, from 6:55 a.m. take the 10 Route to Pacific and Stockton.
47 Van Ness 7 to 10:30 a.m.
  • Route divided into 2 sections: North of Grove, and south of Market.
  • No service between sections.
  • You can try to walk between Grove and Market, about .2 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the northern section of the route to the southern section,transfer to the 12 Route east on Pacific after Van Ness to Harrison Street, where the 12 Route shares stops with the 47 Route.
  • To ride from the southern section of the route to the northern section,transfer to the 12 Route east on Folsom instead of riding the 47 Route. Transfer to the Van Ness portion of the 47 Route at Jackson and Van Ness.

 

49 Van Ness/
Mission
7:15 to 10:30 a.m.
  • No service north of Mission and South Van Ness.
  • Use the 47 Route to Van Ness for service on Van Ness Avenue.
  • You can try to walk between Mission and South Van Ness and the 47 Route service at McAllister, about .5 mile, but expect delays when crossing the race route.
  • To ride from the 47 Route Van Ness Avenue section to the 49 Route Mission Street service, transfer to the 12 Route east on Pacific after Van Ness to any stop on Folsom after 11th for destinations in the inner Mission District, or stay on Route 12 to Cesar Chavez and Mission, where you can transfer to a 14 or 49 route bus.
  • To ride from the 49 Route Mission Street service to the 47 Route Van Ness Avenue section:
    • Transfer to the 12 Route north on Folsom instead of riding the 49 Route or transfer to the 12 Route at Cesar Chavez and Mission.
    • Transfer to the Van Ness portion of the 47 Route at Jackson and Van Ness.
71 Haight/Noriega early reroute Start of service to 10 a.m.
  • No service east of Van Ness.
  • Outbound, board at Market and Van Ness.
