We really had no idea what was in store when H.P. Mendoza told us he was going to bring his ukulele with him when he returned to the stage at Muni Diaries Live. Boy were we all in for a treat.
Around 2:01, H.P. shared his amazing childhood journal technique, gluing Muni transfers to the pages to denote the date:
He then serenaded (yes, serenaded) us in the most charming way with a song about a bygone era in San Francisco, as seen from inside the 14-Mission. Captured in full in the video above, the song begins around 2:45. Lyrics below.

Today, San Francisco Chronicle’s Matier and Ross said it cost SF roughly $105,000 for Batkid to save our fair city. These Batkid assistants probably don’t care, though–nor should they.
Muni rider Sheila shared this on the Muni Diaries Facebook page on the most festive Friday San Francisco ever saw, noting that the kids were “on their way to assist Batkid in SF’s own Batmobile!”
Maybe thinking of Muni Metro as the Batmobile will make your commute more palatable? SFBatkid lessons live on.

Muni Haiku Battle has its legs, you guys. At Muni Diaries Live on Nov. 9 (full event recap here), we brought back our reigning, two-time champ James Nestor to square off in a 17-syllable slugfest against MDL favorite Jesse James. Oh, the haiku, they did volley from one microphone to the other and into our ears and psyches forever and ever and ever. Try to unsee, for example, “Neighbor’s Us Weekly holds her interest. Casually she tongues an open sore.”
The vote was close, but Jesse took Round 1. Our champ was down, but not out. Round 2 video below.

Muni rider Tyler has an adorable little story for you. Gather round.
I was on Muni going to work at City Hall, and all of a sudden I started hearing the faint sounds of an older lady talking. It didn’t sound like English; it sounded a lot like mumbo jumbo “boo bee ba da do bee bo.” She was an older lady with gray hair that didn’t looked combed or washed, and she had a brown trenchcoat on. She was reading the book Les Miserables, out loud, in French. I guess it sounded like mumbo jumbo because of her high-pitched voice and lack of English. Everyone was staring at her as though she were a maniac. I, however, went from extremely annoyed to overjoyed and it sounded like music to my ears. Why? because the story of Les Mis is incredible and genius. I wanted to egg her on and have a legit conversation about the book, but I was 100 percent sure that she didn’t speak English, so I kept my musical theater nerd knowledge to myself.
So cool. So cool.
