BART Workers Begin Strike, No Service on Monday

Today marks the first BART worker strike since 1997, as BART employee unions and the BART board failed to reach an agreement in contract negotiations last night. Traffic on the Bay Bridge has been backed up since 6 a.m. today, and AC Transit is packed, says SFGate. You might recall that the labor dispute this time involves wages and contributions to pensions and health insurance.

Your Weekend Traffic Advisory: Summer Muni schedule, Critical Mass, Pride

“There’s so much going on” has never meant more than it does this weekend. Enjoy, y’all!

Summer Muni Schedule
Due to less ridership during the summer breaks for most San Francisco schools, Muni will implement minor frequency adjustments effective Saturday until Monday, August 19. For details of this seasonal change, please see separate press release.

Critical Mass
On Friday at 6 p.m., the Critical Mass bicycle ride will begin at Justin Herman Plaza.

This week’s Muni moments are as jubilant as they come! On the heels of Prop 8 and DOMA decisions and Sunday’s Pride Parade, here are this week’s best moments on Muni:

1. Waiting for Muni is like a filibuster. Eventually you’ll succeed, but you just have to go thru it all again tomorrow.
2. Bus driver singing, telling passengers to get married on the bus, telling jokes #loveislove #pride #doma.
3. How can the N-Judah be late on a #history making day? Maybe the driver is reading @SCOTUSblog?
4. Equality for all sign on Muni means that much more now, said one rider.
5. Guy in front of me literally covered in head to toe with shiny beads and mini disco balls.

Possible BART Strike Looms as Early as Monday

Two of BART’s unions gave 72-hour notice Thursday night to strike as early as Monday if contract negotiations do not go their way, even though BART management brought new proposals to the table yesterday, as the San Jose Mercury News and NBC Bay Area report. If BART employees do go on strike on Monday, we could be in for a hellish (even more hellish?) commute.
