The Muni Family welcomes you

This makes me think of what the Muni board game might look like. Maybe the object is to drive as many buses as you can all at the same time, a feat even SFMTA struggles with at times.

Via our friend at Tenderloin Geographic Society, who says, “it’s a manual for operators…and I’m willing to bet their manuals look a whole lot more clinical than this now. Charming, isn’t it?”

TGS spotted this at the SFPL’s “Cussed and Discussed” exhibit on Muni’s centennial celebration, which ends Thursday.

So you’ve seen that story going around about the “25 Things I Wish I Knew Before Moving to San Francisco,” right? The story names three things to know about Muni:

1) Google Maps is never right about what time the bus will come.
2) Half of the buses require you to step down into the steps to get the back door to open.
3) Chinatown is a bottleneck on any route going through it

I’m sure you have a lot more Muni truths to share. Also true: our city makes for some gorgeous pictures, especially in black and white.

Enjoy these photos and your weekend!

Pick an Exciting Name for Muni’s Boring Machine

The machines that will build the Central Subway tunnels need a name, and the SFMTA is asking you to vote on names of prominent San Francisco women to bestow on the machines for good luck.

Your choices:

  • Big Alma
  • Juana
  • Mom Chung
  • Firebelle Lil
  • Mary Ellen

These machines will excavate and construct the Central Subway’s northbound and southbound tunnels, traveling from SOMA through Union Square, Chinatown and North Beach.

I must admit that I didn’t know much about these prominent women of San Francisco, and at first I misread “boring” for “uninteresting” (also known as Movies Starring Jennifer Aniston).  To clarify, the voting website has more information about these women. This morning, @bartdiaries told me that “Anyone who doesn’t vote for Big Alma is a damned fool and should have their voting rights taken away.” You can decide for yourself and vote for your favorite two names at the Central Subway website.
