I was riding the 22 Fillmore this afternoon, & at 16th & Bryant the driver shut the door on a woman running for the bus. She yelled & pounded on the bus to no avail. Then while the bus was waiting at the stop light, she pulled it off of its wire. I’ve never seen someone do this before. She caught the bus.

bold, hilarious, inventive. did she actually get on the bus after having done this? i guess stranger things have happened. drivers closing the doors on people is definitely a problem from time to time. typically inexcusable, i’d say.

I’d probably injure myself in the process…but i’ve knocked on the doors of enough Muni buses and have them drive away from me that I can totally understand her frustration.

How did she do this? By running to the back and pulling on the tension wires from where they connect to the bus? If so, I gotta say I’d edit “insanely gutsy” to “insane.” I’ve had a lot of MUNI doors closed in my face (or even with my arm or torso in the frame) over the past 15 years and I’d never dream of pulling that. It’s a pretty short distance between doing that (stupid) and doing something really, really stupid.

Some drivers are real dicks about it, but most drivers don’t do it because if you trip and fall face flat onto the floor or asphalt, the driver and Muni becomes liable. After the bus has pulled away from the curb or bus stop, if they open the doors, they obligate themselves to your safety while walking in the road/stepping off the curb to the bus.
I wouldn’t pull those cords down, you could be arrested for interrupting the operation of the bus. I’m sure you’ve all had the experience where the driver put the bus out of service because of some unruly passenger.
