Brag About Crime on Muni? Not a Good Idea   10.14.11

Cell Phones

You know that overheard conversations on Muni can be entertaining, but who knew it could solve crime? A savvy passenger who overheard a man on Muni bragging about stealing a cellphone and decided to do something about it, reports Bay City News on SFAppeal:

A man was arrested Wednesday for stealing a woman’s iPhone after a passenger on a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus overheard him bragging about the robbery.

The robbery occurred at 9:12 p.m. at a store in the 3200 block of 20th Ave. in the Stonestown Galleria.

A 24-year-old woman had her iPhone snatched out of her hand by a suspect who then ran out of the store along with another suspect, according to police at the department’s Taraval Station.

Shortly afterward, a passenger on a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus overheard the suspect bragging to a group of people on the bus about a robbery he had committed, police said. The passenger called police, who responded and stopped the bus and detained five people.

Sometimes I wear my headphones while riding Muni even though I’m not listening to music just to see what I can overhear. Occupational hazard? Maybe. But looks like it pays off! Click over to SFAppeal to read about what happened next.

Thank You, Khaki-Pants Metro Hero   10.13.11

We made an exception for Rumpus editor Isaac Fitzgerald to tell a story about the D.C. Metro at the Muni Diaries Reunion Show a few weeks ago. And we’re so glad we did. Isaac told a story about heroics on the D.C. Metro, and why wearing khaki pants doesn’t necessarily make you gangster.

Isaac was such a hit that he may have inspired a Missed Connection ad from our event. And you thought you didn’t believe in fate and true love.

Have fun watching Isaac’s retelling of his D.C. Metro story (involving a hockey move!) and try not to laugh too loud in your cube…

Is Muni better upside-down?   10.12.11

Maybe someone was trying to find out. @PatrickLawlerDP sends the image, and says, “Way to go! The person in charge of putting stickers on things should be ashamed!” Is that a job title? Person in Charge of Putting Stickers on Things? Should be, right?

Trendspotting on Muni: Latex > Fur?   10.12.11

Not that kind of latex.

Rider Heather is on top of it. After seeing our photos of balloon dogs on Muni, she sent us this pic of Blue here and said:

Took this pic 4-8-10, or at least thats what my comp tells me. Anyway it seems we have a serial dog-ballooner!!! Watch out! I think I was going down Geneva toward Balboa Bart.

As always, tweet all animals (balloon or otherwise) to @munidiaries or send them via the Muni Diaries submission form.

Important Things: Giant Styrofoam   10.11.11

@RitaBookNews tweeted us this gem the other day, with this title: “Woman brings a huge, life-size piece of Styrofoam on Muni?”

Question-mark, indeed.

We lament the 500 breaches of Muni etiquette that flew out the window so this thing could have a seat(s). But it does look damned comical just sitting there. Perhaps these are the beginnings of a Halloween costume? It reminded me of Ol’ Drippy from Aqua Teen Hunger Force in its blobularness.

Spotted something cool (balloon animals) or ridiculous (see attached) on your ride? Talk to us about it @munidiaries.
