The San Francisco we’re thankful for

This year we celebrated 10 years of telling your Muni tales, and one whole year of sharing more San Francisco stories that happen off the bus. Your stories have a way of reminding everyone why San Francisco is still alright after all.

Because of you, our listeners, readers, and supporters, we hosted two of our local bookstore heroes in studio: Alan Beatts of Borderlands Books and Pete Mulvihill of Green Apple Books (look out for his episode in the coming weeks!) And we got Peter Hartlaub and Heather Knight in front of a live audience to preview their epic, around-the-world-in-one-day-style trip on Muni.

Because more than 4,000 of you submitted stories to us every day for the last 10 years, we were able to celebrate our 10th birthday exactly how we wanted: with a packed room filled with friendly faces—shouts out to our artist and photographer friends who, until then, we had never met in real life but came bearing birthday presents of Muni art and photos. We even learned from the door staff at Elbo Room that some of you insisted on paying for your ticket even as someone donated their extra. These kindnesses are not lost on us even in the busy shuffle of show night.

This year, we’re so, so thankful for those of you that took out your wallets and supported us on Patreon: we know it’s expensive to live here, and your willingness to help us keep the lights on (and replace those microphone cables that the cats chewed up) is appreciated.

We were able to have one more evening at the Elbo Room, where Nuala Sawyer shared a story of one small moment that made a big difference—encapsulating why we do what we do.

And let’s not kid ourselves: because of you, all of our Muni rides are a little better, or at least a little funnier. Without this comMUNIty, we wouldn’t know that the trending hashtag for the N is #NJudas, and the correct way to haul your new cat tree is on an LRV, with a kitten on a leash eating out of a little bowl perched on said cat tree (true story).

So, from the Muni Diaries headquarters, thank you for sharing, riding, listening, reading, and contributing in your own way to life in the best city in the world.

100 Muni Stories

Think you’re being clever with your less-than-high-brow novel? @genaweave is on to you.

Oh snap.

Side story: When I saw 50 Shades of Grey at Green Apple Books, at first I thought it was a book about being black in America. Another friend thought it was a book about aging gracefully. How wrong we were.

Weekend Photos: You Know You’re in San Francisco When…

Oh you know just another morning in SF- Starbucks, Apple, and some light S&M reading on the train.

Just another day in San Francisco, right? Just reading a book on Muni. No big deal…

Three fun things to do this weekend:

  • Soul Dance Party.  $5 off if you wear your semi-formal attire. How much do I love an excuse to dress up? Bring out your best clothes and dance all night. Saturday at the Elbo Room. 647 Valencia Street. Take Muni there: 14, 33, 49. BART: 16th Street Station.
  • Block by Block by Campo Santo. Campo Santo’s original work created with hip-hop theater collective Felonious and writings from Junot Díaz (The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao). De Young Museum. 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive. November 17, 18, 19, 7 pm. Take Muni there: 5, 44, N.
  • Meet Chef Mourad Lahlou of Aziza. The new cookbook by chef Mourad Lahlou made me really hungry and inspired me to organize my spice cabinet. Meet him at Green Apple Books, taste some delicious food, and learn more about Moroccan cooking. Saturday, Nov. 19, 1 p.m. Green Apple Books. 506 Clement Street. Take Muni there: 1, 2, 38, 44

Enjoy these photos and your weekend!

Weekend Photos: A Summer Moment

This week we received some really awesome donations of Fast Passes from you — thank you, and please keep ’em coming! It warms our hearts and keeps Heathered‘s sewing machine humming.

Want three fun things to do this weekend?

Here are some ideas:

  • Secession Art and Design happy hours!  Tonight the reception features Hilary Williams, a part of SF Marathon’s “Mile Marker Art Project.” Friday July 22, 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. 3361 Mission Street (and 30th St). Take Muni 14, 24, 36, 49.
  • Pitchapalooza: Pitch Your Book to a Panel of Experts. This Sunday, pitch your book at Pitchapalooza at the Rockit Room, in conjunction with Green Apple Books. Sunday July 24, 1 p.m., Rockit Room. 406 Clement Street (and 5th Ave). Take Muni 1, 2, 38, 44.
  • Get a post card sent to someone you like! Ed Casey, our @bartdiaries man, started the Post Card Project when he got sick of getting only junk mail and bills in the mail. Ask Ed to send a post card to a friend, and he’ll mail one for you, with a specifically designed task. Check out the post cards he’s sent so far!

Don’t forget, there may be some delays today due to the Giants game today, and construction starts on Monday in Bernal Heights, affecting the 14 and 49 lines.

Enjoy these photos and your weekend!

Lovely moment at the muni station despite all the crazies around me.

Take Muni, Break the Dating Rules

i love you

Yay or Nay: Should you take your date on Muni?

Perhaps I’m too biased to give an opinion on the matter, but I think taking Muni on a date shows your urban cred. There are a lot of great dates you can go on via Muni, at least according to my quick poll of San Francisco friends:

SFMOMA (half-off Jan. 31 to Feb. 24, open late on Thursday evenings) + Zero Zero: Take the 5, 9, 14, 30, 38, 45, J, KT, L, M, N to SFMOMA. This week you can catch the Henri Cartier-Bresson or the screening of “Voyeurism and Early Cinema.” Hot! Then walk over to Zero Zero for their excellent pizza and very respectable Folsom Street Sour.

F-Market excursion: Take the F-Market to Pier 39 for Trish’s Mini Donuts, digest with a walk on along the Embarcadero, and taste chocolates at TCHO.

Brunch at the Beach: Take the 5, 31, 18, or N to Ocean Beach, have brunch at the Beach Chalet, walk back up through the park, and you can rent paddle boats at Stow Lake.

I’ll throw in one of my own: SF Bookstores Muni tour: take 1, 2, or 38 to Green Apple Books, have lunch at Burma Super Star, then take 1-California all the way downtown, walk through North Beach to City Lights Bookstore, and end your trip upstairs at Vesuvio to talk over your finds.

What other dating rules will you break? Over at the new dating website HowAboutWe.com, there is a Break the Dating Rules contest for San Francisco (voting ends tonight!). People are proposing all kinds of quirky dates, like doing handstands and aerials at the Athletic Playground, performing offensive karaoke songs, and participating in a no-hands pie-eating contest.

One contestant suggested breaking the “don’t eat with your hands” rule by taking a few pounds of Dungeness crab and crawfish from the Boiling Crab and chow down on a dock near the Bay. I think that date should also be accompanied by consuming whiskey-in-paper-bags and throwing crab shells at tourists. Now that’s breaking the rules.
