Have you ever had a reason to take Muni to Marin? We’re not talking a simple crossing of the best bridge in the world* here.
The 76-Marin Headlands was a rarely used, always behind schedule route that ferried humans across the great expanse and deep into the nether regions of the Marin Headlands (thus the route’s designation). Now, SFMTA has thrown this poor route a lifeline, last weekend establishing the spiffy, revamped 76X-Marin Headlands Express. See what they did there with that name?

Think you missed the colorful paper Fast Passes of yore? Wait until you see what Fast Passes looked like before the colorful stripe design. The San Francisco Public Library’s “Cussed and Discussed” show about Muni has some interesting old Fast Passes, including one with a pumpkin cutout, and another appropriate back-to-school theme.
axelfeldheim on Instagram took some photos of these old gems.

As long as we’re on that trip down the time capsule, check out these fancy old Fast Passes from 1976 to 1978 and 1987-1988. Makes you look at your ole Clipper card and sigh, doesn’t it?
Via our pal Burrito Justice, Eric Fischer once again dazzles the transit-geek world, this time with amazing old photos of brand-spankin’-new BART stations and the map above, which shows the already nixed Marin line as well as the still-planned-for Geary line that extended to 25th Avenue.
Here’s a great shot of the 24th Street Station plaza back in 1970.
I don’t see a single pigeon. Amazing!
For more great photos from this series, including a shot of a 1972 BART train derailment, check out Eric’s set on Flickr.
Thx: Burrito Justice.

Ever wonder what’s really behind all the things Muni does that frustrate you? Christopher knows the answer.
I got a seat on the Muni underground today and for I think the first time ever I had a clear view of the tunnel as we traveled along. It was pretty cool, although annoying when we stopped because another train was going through the tunnel. Then I thought that maybe all of MUNI’s troubles are due to ghost trains coming and going all night and all day, and then I thought about how that would make for a new TV show.
