Buses Return to Mission Street Saturday

The 14, 14L, and 49 are heading back on their normal Mission Street routes starting this Saturday. These lines were rerouted in early March to make way for road work. The Department of Public Works told MissionLocal that some of the improvements include new bus bulbs at the 24th Street BART plaza, curb ramps along Mission Street, as well as underground repairs of gas lines, earthquake-resistant pipes, and water mains. The DPW also repaved Mission street between 16th Street and Cesar Chavez.

MissionLocal also reports that the SFMTA used the rerouting to see if the temporary route was actually better than the original route.

For now, it’s back to our old familiar bus stops along Mission Street again.

Muni Haiku Battle at Lit Crawl, Oct. 13!

Mark your calendars: we’re putting on a Muni Haiku Battle like you’ve never seen before at this year’s Lit Crawl on Saturday, Oct. 13!

The Muni Haiku Battle is styled after the famed “Dirty Haiku Battle” at Tourettes Without Regrets in Oakland, where emcees battle it out with their best odes in 17 syllables. Tourettes Without Regrets host Jamie Dewolf will be our referee in the Muni Haiku Battle at Lit Crawl. He will be pitting three writers against Caitlin Gill, the nine-time Dirty Haiku champion herself.

Who will attempt to top Caitlin and take home the Muni Haiku Battle trophy? Our contestants:

Anna Pulley: Arts / Culture Ed. at/SF Weekly. Funny ”ha/ha” and funny “queer.”

James Nestor: James has written for Outside Magazine, Dwell, The New York Times, Men’s Journal, and more. He prefers the 24, shaken.

Will Reisman: you know him as the transportation reporter with the San Francisco Examiner. He takes Muni all the time and has only once witnessed someone throwing up on the bus.

We’re huge fans of Lit Crawl, and can’t wait to be a part of the fun this year.

Bus Advertising That Stinks

Talk about a captive audience. Dunkin’ Donuts has launched a unique olfactory ad campaign on buses in South Korea, spritzing morning commuters with smell of coffee. The campaign uses air freshener-like devices that squirt the coffee aroma when activated by a jingle in Dunkin’ Donuts radio ads that play on the buses. The ads are timed to air right before you roll up to a bus stop with Dunkin’ Donut ads and a Dunkin’ Donut shop located conveniently across the street.

The company says it has seen a 16 percent increase in visits to its stores. I guess the smell of coffee beats lots of other possible smells on the bus. What do you think of the ad campaign? Too creepy or kind of cool?

Muni Trivia: Name This Mystery Gauge Thing

Shanna asks on Twitter: “Any idea what this is measuring? Found it under the seat on Muni.”

We had no idea either, until we asked our Muni driver friend, who has an answer for us. “This is a measure for how much sand is left in the bags on the Light Rail Vehicles. The LRVs use a lot of sand on rainy days or for hard braking.”

The LRVs carry sand under the seats and drops sand onto the tracks for traction on rainy days or for hard braking in other situations.

One mystery solved.
