What to do on Muni in an earthquake   08.24.11

Our friends @theCara and @supertamsf alerted us to the Quake Quiz SF site, where you’re presented with a choice of scenarios (including at the Transamerica Pyramid and La Taqueria …) and asked what you’d do there when an earthquake hits. The ladies also pointed out the rat on the tracks in the Muni scenario, which, WHAT? This ain’t New York City!

So, in light of Tuesday’s East Coast earthquake, we thought we’d go over the earthquake-preparation basics in case you’re aboard a Muni vehicle when the big one (or even a littler, but nonetheless violent one) strikes.

Somehow, when faced with the multiple choice questions, we resisted choosing, “Keep listening to your music until the train reaches its destination.”

I mean, really. And this is post-quake:

Visit the Quake Quiz SF site, take the quiz, laugh at the rat, and be prepared!

Busted Muni Shelter on Sutter   08.24.11

Whoa! What happened in front of Orchid Salon? Maybe the good people of that establishment know? @THYMWYA Instagrammed the photo without much commentary: “This is broken and sideways #sfmuni”

Footwear of Choice on Muni   08.24.11

Muni story opportunities happen everywhere, especially when you’re waiting for the T with a bunch of WordCampers. This photo came from George from Automattic, who kindly shared it with me a few weeks ago at the WordPress extravaganza.

I know the weather is San Francisco is always temperate, but barefoot, really? The footwear of choice on Muni can be these flashy orange babies, adorned with cream bow tie, or just anything from Jeremy Brooks’ photo documentation of awesome showgazing. No need to go au naturel!

Little ‘Animals’ on Muni   08.23.11

ever wondered what the little hole in the seat on the MUNI is for?

Bhautik Joshi recently dropped these photos into our Muni Photos Flickr pool, and we instantly loved them. He says of the one above, “ever wondered what the little hole in the seat on Muni is for?” Yes, we have wondered what the little hole in the seat on Muni is for. What a pleasant way to find out the answer.

A Delightful Chat on the 10-Townsend   08.23.11

Hello Muni

Megan boarded the bus the other day routinely. Little did she know she was in for a pleasant surprise.

I climbed into the 10-Townsend bus at Washington and was greeted with a rare surprise. I was the only passenger. It was like I had my own giant Muni Taxi and this pleased me.

As our journey through Pac Heights continued, my newfound private driver began engaging me in conversation. First he pointed out a cute bulldog. Then he squealed in excitement before going on to tell me that bulldogs are adorable but need plenty of training.

The rest of the ride continued this way, him pointing out various pooches and giving me extensive information about their behavior, breeding, temper, etc.

One particular pack really upset him, though. He told me they were ugly and went on to exclaim how he hates ugly dogs. Apparently there’s a television show called “World Ugliest Dogs” that especially unnerves him.

Also as it turns out, my Muni Driver enjoys racing dogs recreationally. He’s what one might call a man of many talents.

The bus began to fill up and unfortunately our conversation began to taper. My exit was bittersweet.

Normally I curse the Muni, but not today. Today I thank you. Because of you, I made a friend.

Have you had a memorable experience on Muni lately? Share your stories here on Muni Diaries.

Photo Diary: Passion of the Muni   08.22.11

Passion of the Metro

This photo by Whole Wheat Toast belongs in some sort of imaginary Muni Museum (where clearly you use* your Clipper card for entry). Cool shot.

* free admission when DC not responding // the admission cops cite you or ask you to leave // something other than regular admission is deducted from your account, and your protest of a citation is tangled up in bureaucratic loopholes for months on end …

What if Muni went overhead?   08.22.11

Follow SMT Rail on Twitter

We can dream, can’t we? SMT Rail is a Silicon Valley-based company with a proposal to solve mass transit problems in cities around the world. The idea is rather simple: Put the vehicles above street traffic. And the proposal isn’t to raise the system aboveground in certain locations, as BART does with elevated rails in the southern part of San Francisco. Nay, SMT wants the whole damn thing up above our heads.

Watch the demo above (apologies in advance about the soundtrack?) or visit SMT Rail’s website for more details. And tell us: If Muni were to implement such a system (forgetting how much it would cost to build), how exactly would they screw it up?

BART’s side of the story on cell phone shutdown   08.21.11

Civic Center BART station

For what it’s worth, here’s the official statement from BART regarding its Aug. 11 shutoff of cell phone service in the platform level of some stations:

Prior to a planned protest on August 11, 2011, BART obtained credible information that led us to conclude that the safety of the BART system would be compromised.  Out of an overriding concern for our passengers’ safety, BART made the decision to temporarily interrupt cell phone service on portions of its system. We are aware that the interruption had the effect of temporarily preventing cellular communications for many BART passengers and their families; and we regret any inconvenience caused by the interruption.  We want to take this opportunity to share some of the information that led to this decision.

Muni accident in Castro leaves pedestrian dead   08.19.11

Update (Sunday, 10:35 a.m.): The pedestrian hit and killed by a Muni shuttle bus on Friday has been identified. SF Appeal has the story.

Update (4:41 p.m.): Dispelling Twitter rumors that the bus in question had been hijacked, @KristinHanes of KGO tweets: “A Muni bus that hit and killed a woman was not stolen, according to SFPD. It was an F line shuttle. Cc @kgoradio http://t.co/NXAsXXL”

Update (3:06 p.m.): @LaronZampf of NBC News has some photos of the scene. The bus in question appears to be a shuttle, not a 33-Stanyan as some have reported.

Update (3:02 p.m.): Per @KCBSNews: “UPDATE on Muni accident: KCBS’ Tim Ryan reports that female pedestrian struck by bus has been killed, 18th and Hartford in the Castro.”

Original post: We’re seeing tweets about a pedestrian-involved Muni accidents in the Castro at 18th and Hartford streets. We’ll do our best to update this post as details emerge.

@KCBSTraffic: “18th St. at Hartford. A Muni Bus has been involved in a crash with a pedestrian and other vehicles. Expect major delays.”
