Muni rider Cristina was forced above-ground, so to speak. That move led to a change of heart.

Two years ago, I sprained my ankle really badly. I live close to Church and Market and I used to take the underground trains when I needed to get downtown. But since my ankle was in such bad shape, I started taking the F-Market because the stop is a block closer. I’ll never go back!

I love the streetcars. All of them are beautiful. I love people-watching along Market Street. I love how even though it caters heavily to tourists, this line ends up serving all the types of people who live, work and hang out along Market Street. It’s my favorite ride in the city.

Cristina translated her love of the streetcars into art. The image above is one of her F-Market dish towels. You can buy them at her Etsy shop.

Take a ride on the Muni Fun Bus

Late last week, when we were busy prepping for Muni Diaries Live, Kelsey dropped this in our inbox.

“I took the fun bus to work this morning.”

Earlier today, when I was about to start digging around for WTF this could be, the fun bus itself pulled into the Kirkland yard across from my office. Not exactly white-whale material, but prescient, at least.

Fun Bus is an ad campaign by Popcorn Indiana. (Guess what they sell?) It’s a fun bus-wrap idea, and one that makes us snack-hungry, or, snackry.

Thanks for making the bus fun again, Popcorn Indiana!

On Saturday night we packed the Elbo Room to listen to stories about the random, unbelievable, and hilarious things that can happen on public transit. We heard tales about the one ride that made you see life in the city differently (or at least made you never touch the hand bars again). Here’s how it all went down:

Comedian Kate Willett lit up the room with her story about how a passing comment from a stranger on Muni can make you realize that being in love with a girl is totally okay.

Your Weekend Transit Advisory: Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, M-Ocean View work

Rock ‘n’ Roll San Francisco Half Marathon
On Sunday the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Francisco Half Marathon will begin at Great Highway and John F. Kennedy Drive. The race will start at 6:30 a.m. The 13.1-mile course will take runners across the Golden Gate Bridge and back through the city to finish at Civic Center. For more event details, please visit http://runrocknroll.competitor.com.

The following street closures will be required:

Note: Local access will be allowed. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the event area until after the race has finished. San Francisco Police Department personnel will be present along the course to direct traffic.

It’s 7:50 a.m. somewhere!

From pregame PBR on the J-Church to busting open the Anchor Steam party box a little early, Muni riders arguably need a fix the most. In case we needed to prove it further to jaded New Yorker Anthony Bourdain, who said of SF, “…underneath a gossamer-thin veneer of granola is, in fact, a two-fisted drinking town.”

Happy Friday, whenever you decide to crack one open.
