Top 10 WTF Muni Moments of 2012

You gotta get from point A to point B, but on Muni, that trip can be just a little…weird. Or totally WTF. Here are the top 10 WTF moments on Muni, as reported by Muni Diaries readers like you.

10. Somebody went number two on the 22, and the photo above tells me that nobody opened a window! So this is why everybody wears a scarf.

9. Goats at the Muni yard. No bigs, right?

8. I mean “WTF” with the utmost respect, sir Crocodile King. This gentleman’s outfit beats any skinny jeans and plaid shirt situation you see around in the city.

7. Everybody wants to know: who is this handsome accordion player?

6. Parenting is made even more difficult when your seatmate is trying to make a drink on the bus. Best comment: “Lesson to be learned here, children: always pour your liquor into your mixer, never the other way around…”

3. Hey, who brought 100 lbs of rice on the bus? Best comment: “I once saw Ozzy Osbourne trying to bring live bats home from Chinatown and when the driver said no livestock on the bus, Ozzy bit their heads off so they were dead and everything was cool.”

2. Remember the slew of fake ads on Muni earlier this year that started out funny but turned sophomoric? (Bi-rite and Tartine were also targets of the fake advertisements).

1. The number one WTF Muni moment of 2012 has to go to the Giants World Series win, which turned into “let’s destroy some property” night.

This list, of course, does not include your daily “Where is my bus” moments. I’m hoping for more “pot Easter Egg” and fewer “burn the bus” kinds of Muni moments next year. What do you say?

So, the San Francisco Giants baseball team won the top prize in professional baseball in the year that ends today. What’s that got to do with Muni? Clearly, you just came out of your coma, so we’ll go easy on you.

The most-viewed post of 2012 on Muni Diaries was “Giants Win World Series! SF Trashes Muni!”. Of course it was. I mean, what else happened this year? Fer srs.

Of course, it wasn’t the baseball game itself, nor the players or fans, who got the most pageviews on this site. It was, sadly, the wanton destruction of a Muni bus, and the story of one guy who tried to stop the madness.

Today marks 100 years since the Municipal Railway became San Francisco’s official public transportation. To further commemorate this anniversary (see our 100 Stories, 100 Days Muni Centennial feature here), we decided to dig up the most popular tweeple of that 1912 day, and see what they had to say. You’re welcome.

“If this system lasts 20 years, it’ll be a miracle.” –@RolphtheMolph (SF Mayor James Rolph)

“I’m thinking, ‘He hopped aboard the streetcar, shed his waistcost, and began his getaway.'” –@gumshoewriter (Dashiell Hammett)

“Can you put in a line that runs up to my home in Sonoma? kthx.” –@heyimfromhere (Jack London)

“Hey mom, can I do a charcoal rubbing of this streetcar?” @imanseladamsyrnot (Ansel Adams)

Santa Santa vs. Santa Dating Service Gal

Santa rides Muni, duh, and not just for Santacon, either.

Eagle-eyed Muni rider Melinda spotted Santa on a 14 recently, amusingly placed above a lady Santa who thinks she can get you a date. Or maybe she is your date? She’s going to look really silly in that hat after today.

From all of us to all of y’alls, have a great holiday. Beware of holiday drunks (including yourself), and remember that Muni is your chariot if you’ve downed too much cheer.

Dressing Up Muni For Christmas

Wonder how the street cars get in the holiday spirit? We’ve been lucky enough to join the Market Street Railway folks to decorate the street cars in the last few years. This year, Jeremy Whiteman of Market Street Railway sent us more photos of cable cars and streetcars all decked out in their holiday gear.

Cue the Christmas music! See more photos of streetcars getting decked out for the holidays …
