Muni Metro 3-car trains in October?

Gasp. Could it be true?

According to Streetsblog SF, Muni’s tests and software upgrades have been done, and three-car Muni Metro trains could come to the system’s underground stations as soon as late October/early November. You might no longer have to wonder why underground platforms are hella long, and the trains themselves are hella short.

We first learned of Muni’s plan to test three-car trains nearly two years ago. Nice to see the agency follow through.

As Streetsblog SF reports, Muni is also planning to implement “double-train loading.” That’s when, say, the K and the M pulling into a station and loading passengers at the same time. Genius!

SNL’s Stefon describes Muni’s hottest line

Okay, not really. That’s a misleading headline. On purpose.

But this bit of amazing landed in our submissions box recently, and had me smiling ear-to-ear.

Take it away, Matty:

I had a conversation with a friend not too long ago about the best way I’ve found to make riding Muni tolerable, especially during rush hour when it’s crazy packed with all of God’s forgotten children. Just look around and narrate in your head what’s happening as if it was a Stefon skit from SNL:

SFMTA is upgrading its current Phelan Loop down by City College on Ocean Avenue, and they want you to name the new plaza. Still sore about not getting the Emperor Norton Bay Bridge? Now’s your shot at redemption.

Check out details on the Phelan plaza renovations. You have until October 15 to submit your name here. We know for a fact how much creativity is out there, evidenced by your renaming of various Muni lines.

Lending a Hand on the N-Judah

Rider RB saw a perfect moment on the N the other day. It’s just a small gesture that makes you think that people are actually all right.

On Monday afternoon at about 1:46 p.m., I saw an amusing Muni scene on the outbound N-Judah just after it came above ground onto Duboce at Church.

A late middle-aged woman with a cane was leaning with her back against the partition at the front of the car rather than take one of the vacant seats offered to her.

A 20-something young lady climbed aboard with a to-go cup of coffee in her left hand, then proceeded to fumble with her one free hand to find $2 and get it into the fare box.

The elderly woman reached over without a word to hold the young lady’s coffee while she paid her fare and received her transfer, then handed her back the coffee. The girl smiled with lips together and nodded her thanks without speaking a word.

A scriptwriter couldn’t have done it better.

Aw, this makes me like people today, kind of like this other coffee-spilling gentleman on Muni.
