Cupid’s arrow hits commuting pair on the 30x

@themarinabambino met his wife thanks to Muni. Recalling that fateful day(s), he says:

We met in August, 2011. It was her first day at a new job. I saw her on the 30X, she turned around and apologized because she was “probably going to fall on me.”

I saw her again the very next day (which…how does that even happen?) and we started chatting. I got her number on that day and the rest is history! We got married last August and had a 30x shaped cake at our wedding!

Pics or it didn’t happen, you say? We asked and here is a pic of the adorable Muni-riding couple at their wedding, complete with the 30X cake!

San Francisco Diaries: How I met the pigeon version of me

Being an adult isn’t easy, especially when you live in San Francisco where “everyone is perpetually in their late-20s to mid-30s.” So when you’re 22 and end up in San Francisco alone, you do what anyone would do: Go wild and make age-22 type of mistakes.

“Looking back now, it’s a miracle I didn’t die. I got in a lot of shady situations. I lost my beloved leather jacket. I left my Blackberry in a cab. In recovery, they say you have to hit rock bottom before you can get better. But my rock bottom just kept getting lower and lower. I drunkenly ran through the surf on Ocean Beach at 1 a.m. and almost got swept out to sea. I hooked up with a Santa Con Santa on the back patio of Mad Dog in the Fog. I was 22 and alone and nobody was around to stop me so I kept going and kept pushing the limits of what I could get away with and still live.”

Today’s story is from Vivian Ho, who you may remember was the criminal justice reporter at The San Francisco Chronicle from 2011 through 2017. She’s reported on the Mario Woods shooting, the San Francisco Police Department, wildfires, and she recently published an incredible investigative piece called “A Life on the Line.”

She’s seen a lot of San Francisco, from the incredibly serious and life-and-death moments to the more quirky and offbeat happenings around town. This story falls under the more quirky side of the spectrum—and we’ve never felt more spiritually connected to the cooing pigeons on our fire escapes.

Special thanks to Vivian for sending over the first photo she’s ever taken with Drew, before the pigeons came into their lives.

Sexual Folklorist Dixie De La Tour on the magic of tele-personals

Dixie De La Tour is the founder of Bawdy Storytelling (“The Moth for Pervs,” per LA Weekly), America’s Original Sex+Storytelling series featuring Real People & Rockstars sharing their bona fide sexual exploits, live onstage. In this podcast episode, she reaches back in time to those bad old days without Tinder, and you have to call the tele-personals to find Mr. Right/Mr. Right Now.

Instead of swiping left or right, you had to call the tele-personals to listen to voice messages, leave a voicemail to someone you fancy, then hope they leave you a voicemail with their phone numbers eventually. Dixie met one gentleman who fell in love with her voice, and he chose an interesting venue for their first meeting. Three guesses where?

Dixie’s next show is this Thursday, November 16th, at the Verdi Club. The theme is “Hurt So Good.” Tickets are on sale now so you can see her in person.

Having your first kiss … on Muni

AD_MuniDiaries

Whether you’re a happy observant of Valentine’s Day or you’d rather set fire to photos of your ex, today’s Muni Diaries episode is probably something we can all get behind. Local filmmaker Ariel Dovas shared the story of his first kiss, and because he’s a San Francisco native, of course this happened on Muni! Cue all the jitters, nerves, and where-do-I-put-my-lips moments.

Ariel was kind enough to dig up some old photos of himself. Teenage awkwardness seems completely adorable now.

Ariel is also the creative director at BAYCAT (Bayview-Hunters Point Center for Arts and Technology) and co-founder of the collaborative art space The Secret Alley. This story was recorded at Muni Diaries Live at the Make-Out Room on April 22, 2011.

Missed Connection with Accordion Guy on Muni

accordian muni diaries

This accordion player’s furrowed brows and thoughtful face really intrigued us when @mike3k snapped his photo on Instagram. Then, proving that the Internet is not all bad and that people are still all right, our Instagram commenters soon revealed that this man is “accordion extraordinaire” ILhan Sadri.

We found ILhan and asked him about his Muni ride (and why the furrowed brows). He said:

That picture was taken on the 43 while on my way to UCSF hospital to visit a dear friend. He had just had major heart surgery and what looks like an unpleasant grimace on my face is actually the face of an intensely worried person! I thought marching into a hospital room wearing accordion would cheer him up. It worked.

Here’s ILhan playing “I Love the Nightlife.”

Book lovers meet in a totally karmic moment on Muni

same_book

Things don’t always … how to say this? Don’t always gel or align on Muni. But when you’re deep into reading an actual book* and look up to see that another rider is reading THE SAME EXACT BOOK*, what else can you do but strike up a convo?

This exact thing happened recently to Muni rider Stan: “Making friends the old fashioned way: talking to strangers about books.”

Bravo!
