A wave of great photos showing riders on Muni arrived in our Flickr group over the last week. We often highlight photos that showcase Muni vehicles, but in the end, we’re really all about the people who rely on the transit system day in and day out.

Here’s a recap of the week’s Muni news:

  • Muni Station Escalators Break Down About as Often as You Might Think (SF Appeal)
  • ‘Muni’ tops list of names for Newsom baby No. 2 (The Mommy Files/SFGate)
  • Happy 98th Birthday, Muni! And for your present… (Market Street Railway)
  • SF Offers $2 Million Settlement to Cable Car Crash Victim (KTVU)
  • Cable Car Revenues Just a Bit Higher Than Payouts for Their Accidents (SF Appeal)
  • SFMTA Weekend Traffic and Transit Advisory (SFMTA)
  • Contract showdown on tap for Muni operators (SF Examiner)

And with that, we wish you a safe, happy, prosperous, and meltdown-free 2011! Enjoy these embiggened versions of the photos above and your weekend … and don’t forget: Muni is free tonight from 8 p.m. through 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Weekend Photos: Fashion Statement

Move with the fashion

Muni Photos Flickr pool proves my theory some more. The older gentleman below is looking super cool, sporting a pair of aqua-blue sneakers that matches his suit and cane while he waits for the bus next to a matching Tron poster. Amazing! We’ll be reviving our Fashion Friday contest soon, so if you spot fashionable Muni riders, drop their photo into our Flickr pool!

In Muni news this week:

  • Gavin Newsom nominates Muni rider with background in finance for SFMTA opening (Under the Dome/SF Examiner)
  • Muni has ideas for spending, but needs millions (SFGate)
  • Muni operator in West Portal crash had dicey record (SF Examiner)
  • Opinion: Things are Going Better for Clipper (Akit’s Complaint Department)
  • Price Tag for Full Restoration of Muni Service: $22 Million (BCN via SF Appeal)
  • On Muni Time Capsule, we looked back on the Transbay Terminal after its “hump” was demolished last week.
  • And here’s SF Appeal’s SFMTA Weekend Advisory for you.

Oh, by the way: Our deal dealer Scoutmob just alerted us to their half-off deal at Grub. The word on the street is that this is the home of the lobster hash. Yum.

Enjoy these photos and your weekend!

It’s Almost Over: Today’s Giants parade will disrupt Muni

The World Series champions San Francisco Giants will be toasted by the city in a parade this morning that starts at 11. CBS 5 has more:

“The parade will begin at 11 a.m. on Montgomery Street at Washington Street, the mayor’s office said. It will head south on Montgomery Street to Market Street, where it will go west to City Hall.

The public is invited to line the sidewalks along the parade route or gather in Civic Center Plaza for the celebration. Attendees are advised to arrive early and take public transportation.”

Here’s the advisory from SFMTA:

All Muni Metro trains will stop at Civic Center station for the celebration and Parade, as well as at Powell and Montgomery stations for the parade. The SFMTA will schedule six additional Metro shuttles to supplement the existing Metro service.

The additional service will begin at approximately 10 a.m. and continue until the event clears at Civic Center.

The following Muni routes and lines will be affected:

  • California Cable Car
  • F-Market and Wharves
  • 1-California
  • 2-Clement
  • 3-Jackson
  • 5-Fulton
  • 6-Parnassus
  • 8x-Bayshore Express
  • 9-San Bruno
  • 10-Townsend
  • 12-Folsom-Pacific
  • 19-Polk
  • 21-Hayes
  • 27-Bryant
  • 30-Stockton
  • 30X-Marina Express
  • 38-Geary
  • 41-Union
  • 45-Union-Stockton
  • 71-Haight-Noriega

And … Market Street Railway has an amazing photo of a 22-Fillmore going by the SF Seals stadium back in 1958, the first year the Giants played in San Francisco.

Delays on the N-Judah on the Embarcadero to recommence in … 157 days.

Where Muni turnstiles go to die...

This week Muni welcomed yet more new turnstiles to mixed reviews, at least in our Twitter world. And lo and behold, someone’s found a loophole to open the gate (see news below). Pretty sure that loophole will be patched up soon. In the mean time, Muni news this week:

  • Despite Cost, Clipper Card Promises Convenience (Streetsblog SF)
  • MUNI’s New Fare Gates – People Behaving Badly (KRON4 and SFAppeal)
  • Uncommon Success for Union Adversary (WSJ on Sean Elsbernd and “Measure to Undo Muni Contract Rules”)
  • Cable car improvement project begins (SF Examiner)
  • Spot.us pitch: why can’t Muni run on time? (Spot.us)
  • Earlier this week: Mini Muni meltdown (SFGate)
  • Muni Sickout Was A Big, Fat Bust (SFAppeal)
  • Will Muni Paper Pass Vendors Convert to Clipper? (Akit’s Complaint Department)
  • Weekend traffic advisory: Chinatown Moon Festival (SFMTA)

We are counting down to the next Muni Diaries Live! spoken party at the Make-Out Room on Friday, Oct. 29! Look out next week for more information about our lineup, and permanent marker this in your calendars. We’d love to see your happy faces!

Enjoy these photos and the weekend fog.

TGIF and everything, but tomorrow is a real celebration here at Muni Diaries. Why? I’ll tell you tomorrow afternoon. Sorry to be such a tease! Meanwhile, Jeff’s away from the helm and I’m woman-ing the ship for a few days. In Muni news this week:

By now complaints about our freezing grey summer probably sounds like a broken record. You know what might chase the cold away, though? A fun night at Edinburgh Castle, hosted by The Tenderblog. The Tenderbloggers are hosting their first TenderNight next Wednesday at 8 p.m. as an ode to their ‘hood. It’s an open-mic competition so if you’ve got stories to tell (especially ones involving the bus, for my obvious selfish reasons), make sure you go prepared!

Enjoy your weekend and these photos.

Weekend Photos: Into the Fog

Judah @ Duboce Park

So it’s July now. Like, really July. Like, the daily fog and wind and cold prove that it’s July. Not like last week and weekend’s 75-degree aberrant July.

It was a light week in terms of Muni news (wish we could say the same for BART: Mehserle verdict story here):

  • Woman could receive $750K from Muni accident claim (Examiner)
  • SFMTA Board Votes to Partially Restore Muni Service That Was Cut in May (Streetsblog SF)
  • Crime stalling on Muni routes (Examiner)
  • Phelan Bus Loop Project, First in Balboa Area Plan, Gets Federal Funding (Streetsblog SF)
  • See SFAppeal for weekend traffic details

Here’s wishing you all a great, safe weekend. Enjoy the photos!
