Reminder: Muni Diaries Pub Crawl, Tomorrow!

redmunisfOMG, it’s one day away: The first-ever Muni Diaries pub crawl.

Come out to schmooze and booze it with Muni Diaries editors, readers, and contributors. We’re looking forward to putting faces with some familiar names we’ve grown to love over the past several months. Here’s your chance to do the same, and to get your midweek drink on, to boot! The forecast calls for clear skies (remember those?), so there’s even more reason to celebrate.

Feel free to join for all or some of the event as we snake our way from Church and Market over to the Mission. Here’s the schedule:

6 p.m.: Lucky 13: 2140 Market St. between 15th Street and Church. (routes: J, K/T, F, N, S, M, L, 22, 37)

7:45ish: We’ll move on to Dalva: 3121 16th St. between Valencia and Guerrero (we’ll take the 22 from Lucky 13. See 511.org’s alternatives if you’re starting here)

9ish: Finally, to Doc’s Clock: 2575 Mission between 21st and 22nd streets (we’ll either take the 14 or 49 — here are alternative routes if you’re joining here)

Muni Mani-Pedi (Say It Three Times!)

mani-pediOur very own Suzanne was trolling Flickr getting our Muni photo pool together and found this other captivating Flickr Group Pool: Muni Mani-Pedi. It is, very much so, what it sounds like — photos of people snip-snapping away, and probably subsequently depositing their clippings for the rest of us to relish.

If you’ve captured photos or (even barfier) videos of this strange but much-too-frequent phenomenon, send them to us and the Flickr group.

Hayes considered for two-way, eh?

A wee little portion of Hayes Street (home to the 21 line) east of Gough is proposed to become two-way, according to a recent SFGate article. It may not turn into a big deal (and didn’t seem like one for most of the time I was reading this story), but a few little bits are worth mentioning.

From a Muni planner, regarding the potential loss of a transit-only lane opened during the evening commute:

But without that transit lane, the buses would be slowed, and that would run counter to San Francisco’s transit-first policy, said Muni planner Julie Kirschbaum.

1. What San Francisco transit-first policy? Oh, that one. If this is a real policy, then great. If it’s one of those feel-good, not-really-enforced-but-is-a-good-idea policies, then not so great. A continued wealth of good ideas with bad execution (i.e., no way to enforce them or fund them) seems to be a chronic problem in the Muniverse, something that continues to disappoint many of us riders. We hope it’s taken into consideration as more than lip service over this issue. The bottom line, though, is that you don’t make roads less hospitable to cars while also making it tougher to drive buses down them.

Coming 2.18.09: The First-Ever Muni Diaries Pub Crawl!

You’ve heard the rumors. You’ve felt the chatter. You’ve smelled the … oh, never mind.

We’re pleased to announce the first Muni Diaries Pub Crawl, set to take place Wednesday, February 18. Whether you’ve been following this blog, our Twitter feed, or best of all, submitting stories, come join us for some beer and cocktails and meet fellow reader-riders!

We’ve carefully crafted a public-transportation-friendly route: We’ll start things off at our official supporter, Lucky 13 (Market and 15th Street), then head over to Dalva on 16th Street near Guerrero. From there, we’ll close the night out at Doc’s Clock on Mission (near 22nd Street). Getting home, well, that’s your problem. And Muni’s.
